Earlier this year i was commissioned to paint a large quantity of hockey masks for a vendor at a horror convention in the UK. I was sent 60 blank white hockey masks, which were around 2.5mm thick and made of polypropylene plastic. The mask itself was sturdy and well made, the plastic had a lot of give to it but felt thick and durable. The shape was interesting and after research i found out very little of the masks origins but could confirm it was not a recast of any current available blanks and in fact had one very interesting feature, it was symmetrical! Overall for a what was considered a cheap mass produced mask i was very impressed. The 60 blanks were all cut and shaped well and had the snaps already attached, the elastic straps were not top quality but if the mask was gently heated and shaped to reproduce for example the look of the part 3 mask worn they did not need to be made of thick rubber elastic strapping. Once i had finished the commission i purchased some myself direct from the supplier in China and painted them in different styles including some custom designs. I will continue to offer these masks on commission basis as i believe that they are a good alternative to the more high end line of masks, they make a good stand in for your precious screen accurate hockey mask when costuming and they also make a great play mask for kids of collectors!
Here are some examples of the made in china budget masks i have produced.
Here's how the made in china mask looks. You can see from the vent hole placement and eye shape it is symmetrical.
In part 3 the hockey mask has a wrap around look to it caused by the thin plastic mask being pulled tight to the actors head, in the pictures below you can see how i achieved that effect by gently heating the mask and pulling in the sides then letting it reset.
A clear blank painted white on the inside of the mask? No...
polypropylene white plastic is very translucent.
Same mask as above but in different lighting.
A custom design.
